The two firms are creating a new APP, called mymobility™, which would work on either iPhone or Apple Watch. This app could change arthroplasty rehab in profound ways.
The mymobility app will act as a virtual and continuous care team on the patient’s wrist. The patients will be provided with support and guidance as they prepare and recover from their surgeries, while the surgeons will receive continuous patient data which will allow them to optimize care. Surgeons will be able to monitor patient activity level while simultaneously sending them information and reminders directly to their Apple Watch.
Zimmer Biomet also announced the mymobility Clinical Study, which is designed to study the app’s impact on patient outcomes and overall costs for joint replacement patients. For this study, patients will use mymobility in conjunction with the Apple Watch as they go through their hip or knee replacement journey. Researchers will use patient-reported feedback combined with the continuous health and activity data from the Apple Watch to provide new insights into the power of mymobility app to affect the standard of care for these surgeries. The study has the potential to enroll up to 10,000 United States participants.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
