Siemens Healthineers Partners With NuVasive

San Diego, California-based NuVasive, Inc. has a new strategic partnership with Erlangen, Germany-based Siemens Healthineers to advance operating room workflow efficiency and create increased precision in the delivery of minimally disruptive spine surgery technologies.

According to the company, “In their Spine Precision Partnership the companies will join forces in advancing their proprietary technologies with the objective of creating solutions which improve operating room (OR) workflow efficiency and provide increased precision in the delivery of minimally disruptive spine surgery technologies. The first step in the Spine Precision Partnership is to integrate NuVasive’s Pulse surgical automation platform with Siemens Healthineers’ Cios Spin cutting-edge mobile 3D imaging for intra-operative quality assurance.”

“We at Siemens Healthineers are excited to work with NuVasive to develop intra-operative 3D-imaging and navigation tools for our advanced imaging systems that empower spine surgeons and neurosurgeons to be more precise, faster and cost efficient in the operating room. Increased workflow efficiency, better image quality, as well as predictable and reproducible results, will transform care delivery and set a new standard in spine surgery,” said Peter Seitz, head of surgery at Siemens Healthineers.

Matt Link, executive VP of Strategy, Technology & Corporate Development at NuVasive, told OTW, “The announced collaboration with Siemens Healthineers is the first partnership that has been formed for the integration of NuVasive’s Pulse™ surgical automation platform, which will commercially launch at the end of September. With Siemens being a global leader in the imaging space, and NuVasive being a leader in innovation spine technologies, it makes strategic sense for these two medical device leaders to join forces to transform surgery.”

“The collaboration between NuVasive and Siemens, known as the Spine Precision Partnership, will provide clinical value to surgeons and hospitals with increased workflow efficiency and improved visualization to drive superior patient outcomes. World-class imaging is essential for successful spine surgery and we are thrilled to partner with a global powerhouse and innovator in the surgical-imaging space.”

“Many current technologies are cost-intensive, not integrated (disparate systems) and can add significant time to the overall case. For these reasons, the actual utilization of such equipment is low. The NuVasive Pulse surgical automation platform can be utilized throughout the entire procedure, requires minimal setup and can be utilized in nearly all spine cases. The combination of the Siemens’ Cios Spin and the NuVasive Pulse platform will provide an integrated solution that can offer workflow improvement to a surgeon at a more economical price point to the hospital. For example, the smaller footprint is more manageable than a CT scan in a crowded OR. Our solutions will be procedurally integrated specifically with the surgeon’s workflow in mind to drive higher utilization.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
