Eric M. Cohen, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstruction surgery of the hip and the knee, has joined Rhode Island-based University Orthopedics.

Dr. Cohen received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine. He then completed an orthopedic residency and hip and knee arthroplasty fellowship at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the Lifespan Health System. Dr. Cohen also completed a fellowship in orthopedic trauma.

“University Orthopedics is very proud to have Dr. Cohen on board,” said President of University Orthopedics Edward Akelman, M.D. “His level of experience in the field will greatly benefit our team, and most importantly, our patients.”

Dr. Cohen will also join the faculty of the Department of Orthopedics at the Warren Alpert Medical School as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedics. He will treat patients at the Total Joint Center at the Miriam Hospital, at the Rhode Island Hospital, and at all University Orthopedics’ locations.

Dr. Cohen told OTW, “I look forward to serving the New England patient population with quality care for all of their joints needs while training the next generation of orthopedic surgeons at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.”

“I plan to continue to build my network with the thriving medical community in the Providence area and with the broader hip and knee replacement community nationally. I look forward to building a rewarding practice in this community.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
