DePuy Synthes Launches ATTUNE Revision Knee

Appearing on the red carpet at the 2018 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting in New Orleans this week is the DePuy Synthes ATTUNE Revision Knee System.

The product is another part of the ATTUNE Knee portfolio and features the ATTUNE GRADIUS Curve, which addresses the unnatural sliding of the femur on the tibia. Also included in the system is GLIDERIGHT Articulation, which is designed to enable the ATTUNE Knee design to mimic the normal patellofemoral kinematics of the human knee.

Rajit Kamal, vice president and global platform leader of knees at DePuy Synthes, told OTW, “In 2013 we launched the primary version of the ATTUNE Knee; to date, implants have been provided for more than 575,000 patients in 43 countries around the world. Not only that, but we have six years of data that are very encouraging. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a successful surgery, but 5% of patients need to undergo a revision within the first 10 years after the initial surgery. This system is an excellent way to meet those patients’ needs.”

“There are studies indicating that up to 20% of knee replacement patients are not satisfied with their surgeries, so this product is addressing patient satisfaction. Patients with a previous implant can lose confidence, for example, while going down the stairs as their flexion is ‘off’ because the thigh bone slides forward on the shin bone. The ATTUNE GRADIUS Curve controls the glide so that there is a more natural feeling. Thus, instead of a revision salvage operation the surgeon is getting improvements in patient reported outcomes.”
