The WishBone Orthopaedic Foundation (WBOF) was established to “support pediatric orthopaedic missions. Through donations from individuals and corporate sponsors, WBOF purchases the necessary implants and instruments to be used during medical mission trips throughout the world. The foundation’s commitment is to focus the attention and donations to help children who need orthopedic surgery.”
“Many young children in these countries are unable to get the medical attention they need at an early age. Their societies toss them away and abandon them because of their deformities,” says Marlin Stutzman, President of WBOF.
“The use of single use kits is a win-win for performing surgeries in areas where surgical facilities do not meet sanitary requirements. These products are ideal for mission trips,” states Allison McSherry, executive director of operations.
Mr. Stutzman told OTW, “There are multiple exciting things about the establishment of WBOF. We are the first organization that focuses on pediatric orthopedics. On medical mission trips, surgeons are using the smallest adult implant and cutting them down to fit into the child patient. With our relationship to WishBone Medical—the only company that produces pediatric implants and instruments in sterile packed single use disposable kits—we will be able to help many children around the world.”
“We’ve met surgeons who have a desire to participate in medical mission trips but don’t know how to move forward to make it happen. WBOF will work with established mission groups and also help place surgeons into teams to help children suffering from orthopedic issues.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
