Ron Tavlin has been named the first-ever Vice President, Business Development at Mazor Robotics Ltd. Tavlin will report directly to Ori Hadomi, Mazor’s Chief Executive Officer. The company is based in Caesarea, Israel.

“Last year, we began an effort to expand the use of Mazor’s core proprietary technology beyond our current indications to further develop our business with the focus on continued growth and innovation. This effort has progressed to the point where a proven business development leader will move our initiatives forward and maximize our opportunities to heal through innovation.”

“Ron Tavlin brings to Mazor an impressive business development track record. He will lead the implementation of our strategies to develop Mazor’s business beyond our current spine focus as we pursue our goal of being the leader in image based medical robotics,” commented Hadomi in the October 12, 2017 news release.

“Tavlin has more than 25 years of experience with public and private companies. Prior to joining Mazor, he was a consultant supporting the Medtronic Ventures and Corporate Development teams, with an emphasis on supporting the business development activities in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and AsiaPacific (APAC).”

“Prior to Medtronic, he was the Chief Operating Officer of BlueWind Medical, and the Co-founder and Managing Partner of Omega Capital, a private equity fund focused on early stage, middle market, and turnaround opportunities, including medical devices. Tavlin received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the City University of New York, and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Stern School of Business New York University.”

Ron Tavlin told OTW, “My past experience includes exploring strategic collaboration, new technology scouting and evaluation, and defining strategic opportunities. This experience is well aligned with Mazor Robotics’ vision of providing new and improved robotic technologies to assist our physician community and improve patient outcomes.”

“The Mazor Robotics management team is focused on continued technological advancement that will leverage the Mazor X and Renaissance platforms to new potential opportunities in brain therapies, total knee replacement, shoulder, and other additional indications that will benefit from the many advantages that robotic surgery can provide. Mazor will continue to innovate through organic and inorganic development of new technologies and capabilities, strategic collaboration, joint venture partnerships and acquisition, to further support the company’s market opportunity and growth potential.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
