David M. Dare, M.D., a fellowship trained orthopedist specializing in sports medicine and shoulder surgery, has brought his talents to the Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic in North Carolina.

As the company wrote in its September 7, 2017 news release, ”Dr. Dare began his academic career at Boston College, where he graduated magna cum laude. He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia. Dr. Dare then completed his surgical internship at Cornell University/New-York Presbyterian Hospital and his orthopaedic surgery residency at the #1 ranked Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.”

“During his residency, Dr. Dare was awarded the Thomas Wickiewicz, M.D. Resident Research Grant and the Thomas P. Sculco Award, an award given by colleagues and hospital staff to the resident that most excels in patient care.”

“He was also named an AOA Emerging Leader. After his residency training, he completed a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery, where he served as assistant team physician for the New York Giants and Iona College.

“Dr. Dare has authored over 20 peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters, and has given multiple podium and poster presentations at national and international conferences. He currently serves as a journal reviewer for the Hospital of Special Surgery Journal and The American Journal of Sports Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Medical Association (AMA).”

Dr. Dare told OTW, “At Hospital for Special Surgery, I treated complex injuries of the shoulder and knee. And I worked with some of the best doctors in the world. Raleigh also boasts some of the best doctors in the world and I look forward to collaborating with them and cultivating long lasting relationships with my patients.”

“At Hospital for Special Surgery, I trained with the best orthopaedic surgeons in the world. I benefited from exposure to an enormous breadth and volume of complex patients and problems. With this, and my background in education, I excel at communicating with and treating patients with even the most difficult problems.”

“I most look forward developing a long-lasting relationship with the people of Raleigh. I consider myself to be exceedingly available to my patients and treat them with the kindness and respect they deserve.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
