Stewart is survived by his wife, Maribeth; six children, Mary (Joseph) Wustner, Kathleen (David Swinney) Stewart, Kevin (Terri) Stewart, Patsy Stewart, Tom (Annette) Stewart, Peggy (Chuck) Angevine; grandchildren Taryn, Alex, Andrew, Ryan, Zach, Maddie, Riley, Charlie, Jackson, Izabelle; and brother Jim Stewart.
Otto Stewart was born in 1927 in Hornell, New York, to Otto K. and Lorene Driscoll Stewart. He attended Georgetown University for both undergraduate and medical school, finishing in 1952. While serving in the Army Medical Reserve in Germany, he met and married Lieutenant Maribeth McMahon, an army nurse from Portage, Wisconsin.
After his military service, Dr. Stewart completed his residency at Duke University where he served as chief orthopedic resident. Life then led Dr. Stewart and his wife to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where Dr. Stewart joined Dr. John Van Driest, his chief in Germany. Together they created a flourishing orthopedic practice that included eight hospitals. Dr. Don Gore joined the partners in 1968 and the three became lifelong friends.
Dr. Stewart was dedicated to community service. He was president of St. Nicholas Hospital, chairman of the Piedmont Orthopedic Society, a member of the Sierra Cascade Trauma Society, a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, member, and a board member of the Bay Lakes Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He and his wife were parishioners of St. Clement Catholic Church for 56 years and of Santa Catalina Catholic Church in Oro Valley, Arizona, where they had a second home.
A visitation will be held at St. Clement Catholic Church in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on Monday, August 7, 2017 from 3:00-5:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow. Dr. Stewart will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery.
Dr. James Urbaniak, spokesman for the Piedmont Orthopedic Society, stated, “Dr. Otto Stewart finished his Duke Orthopaedic Residency in 1962. He and his wife Mickey faithfully attended the annual Piedmont Orthopaedic Society meetings for nearly 50 years. He was well known for the presentation of the Piedmont Kelley Award for the Scientific Session each year along with Glen Musselman. Otto and Glen also co-chaired the Piedmont Orthopedic Society annual meeting in 1981. He will be missed by the Piedmont.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
