Michael Pratt, M.D, MSPE, MPH, FACSM, FACPM, recently received the 2017 American College of Sports Medicine Citation Award for his work in research and public health policy at the association’s annual meeting in Denver, Colorado.

Pratt, a professor of global health and director of the Institute for Public Health at the University of California, San Diego, worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for 28 years. He was director of the Physical Activity and Health Branch for five years.

He has helped shaped physical activity guidelines and the U.S. Surgeon General’s report in 1996. He also was director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center on Physical Activity during his time with the CDC.

In addition, he helped develop research and public health policy networks and programs in Latin America, including international links to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) “Exercise is Medicine” initiative.

“Citation Award winners are selected for their leadership and contributions in the areas of research and scholarship, clinical care, administrative services or educational services,” said Walter Thompson, FACSM, president of ACSM in a press release. “We’re happy to recognize Dr. Pratt’s tremendous accomplishments.”

Pratt has also published almost 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications on physical activity with seven of them being cited more than 1,000 times and 32 of them being cited more than 100 times.

He is a fellow of ACSM and has been a member for 36 years. He was also an instrumental member of the senior editorial management group of the Lancet Physical Activity series in both 2012 and 2016.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
