Matthew Jewett is the new Chief Executive Officer of Minneapolis-based Conventus Orthopaedics, Inc. Jewett, formerly an executive at Johnson & Johnson/DePuy Synthes, will also serve on the Conventus Board of Directors.

“Matt’s strategic acumen and proven track record of leadership within orthopaedics made him the ideal choice to lead Conventus,” said Scott Flora, Chairman of the Board for Conventus. “We are pleased to have Matt join our company as we work to establish the Cage technology as the standard-of-care for the treatment of extremity fractures.”

Andrew ElBardissi, M.D., a surgeon and an investor at Deerfield Management, the largest investor in the company, was also appointed to Conventus’ Board of Directors. “We are thrilled to welcome Matt as a preeminent leader in orthopaedics and we are excited to help bring an innovative platform technology to market that will transform the treatment of patients with extremity fractures,” said Dr. ElBardissi. “Our recent investment, coupled with Matt’s appointment illustrates our commitment to build Conventus into an innovative and leading orthopaedic company.”

Jewett told OTW, “The immediate focus of our company is to establish the Conventus Cage technology in proximal humerus fractures. Outcomes to date have been very promising in terms of reducing complication and reoperation rates. We are working closely with key centers to collect the relevant clinical and economic data for publication and we are finalizing our next generation Proximal Humerus system to make the procedure easier.”

“What excites me the most about the Conventus Cage technology is the opportunity to help patients recover from extremity fractures. With our current focus on proximal humerus fragility fractures, I believe we will demonstrate meaningful reductions in complication and reoperation rates. That would be a huge benefit for both patients and the healthcare system. Proximal humerus is only the start as the Conventus Cage technology will help patients suffering from a broad range of extremity fractures. The patient benefit may vary by fracture location, in some areas it may reduce complication and reoperation rates and in others it may enable less invasive surgery with quicker recovery and improved range of motion.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
