HSS: Five New Physicians!

Five new physicians have joined Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York: two chiefs of services and three orthopedic surgeons.

Thomas Bauer, M.D. joins HSS as incoming Pathologist-in-Chief. He told OTW, “For more than 30 years, I have sub-specialized in orthopedic pathology, focusing on the mechanisms of success and failure of orthopedic reconstructive procedures and devices. HSS is unique in that it’s a specialty healthcare provider that really sets the standard for musculoskeletal health care. Maintaining that position requires teamwork, dedication and focus.”

“The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at HSS has a long and distinguished history of classical musculoskeletal pathology. I look forward to helping maintain that tradition, at the same time improving efficiency in diagnosis, enhancing collaborative research, and promoting programs of continuous improvement through which our laboratories can help HSS maintain its vision of the highest quality patient care, research, innovation, and education.”

Karen Onel, M.D. a former fellow at HSS, now returns as Chief of Pediatric Rheumatology. She commented to OTW, “I had the great fortune of training and then working at HSS for 12 years. Honestly there is no place like it. We can provide care for children with rheumatic diseases in a way that isn’t possible anywhere else. However, change is important to growth and development as a physician and scientist. Working in a children’s hospital allowed me to become involved in clinical trials, to engage in networks of pediatric rheumatologists focused on clinical and translational research as well as enhancing quality and patient experience. Still, the dream was always to return to HSS to bring these skills to the hospital uniquely positioned to use them to their best advantage.”

“I became a rheumatologist to care for children with rheumatic diseases in the best way possible and to help to advance the field so that the ‘best’ would really be the ideal way. Given my training and the past over 20 years, I believe that I am in the best position to do so.”

Daniel Osei, M.D., a former resident at HSS, returns as a hand and upper extremity surgeon. He told OTW, “For me, the decision to join HSS is primarily about coming home. I am a native New Yorker and it is exciting to be back amongst friends, family and the environment in which I grew up. I am also an alumnus of the HSS orthopedic residency program, returning here has allowed me to reunite with so many colleagues and mentors.”

“I am looking forward to bringing my skills to this world class institution and to the patients who seek care here. I am eager to help educate the next generation of orthopedic thought leaders currently in training at HSS and I am committed to scientific research that will keep the institution at the forefront of orthopedic clinical care.”

Jose Rodriguez, M.D., a former HSS resident, now returns as an adult reconstruction and joint replacement surgeon. He told OTW, “Home is not a place of comfort, but a place where one belongs. HSS has a culture for excellence, innovation, surgical education and completely redefines what ‘the best’ means in patient care. My clinical research has advanced fundamental concepts in knee replacement longevity, total hip revision, and pioneered direct anterior approach hip surgery techniques.

“I am proud to come home to join my colleagues and help contribute to shaping the concepts of ‘best’, and train the next generation of surgeons.”

Sheeraz Qureshi, M.D. is a minimally invasive spine surgeon who comes to HSS from New York’s Mount Sinai. He commented to OTW, “As the number one hospital in the world for orthopedics, HSS has a proven commitment to clinical and academic excellence. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the best multi-disciplinary team in the world whose only focus is to provide the best musculoskeletal care for patients.
