Minneapolis-based Vertebral Technologies, Inc. (VTI), a minimally invasive surgery (MIS) company, has signed a contract agreement with St. Louis, Missouri-based Resource Optimization & Innovation (ROi), a provider-owned cost management and supply chain solutions organization.

VTI President and CEO Matt Kyle stated in the February 6, 2017 news release, “One of VTI’s objectives is to ensure surgeons have access to our unique implants to best serve their patient’s needs. Our devices provide unique advantages to surgeons dealing with difficult patient anatomy and disc space access, especially at L5-S1 and L4–L5 levels. We believe our implants should be in every surgeon’s surgical quiver to best serve patient need. We are excited to begin working with ROi member groups and ensuring surgeons know they have access to our devices.”

Kyle told OTW, “We are excited to be able to expand our differentiated product suite to surgeons in many different faciliities across the country. ROi’s recognition that VTI products are differentiated and fill a clinical need is important as VTI continues to grow and expand its scope and clinical impact. In addition to ROi, we are under contract with HealthTrust and several other health systems across the country that help work on expanding our partnerships with GPOs [group purchasing organizations] and IDNs [integrated delivery networks], so more surgeons have access to our products.”

“It is exciting to see the level of traction we are achieving when surgeons and systems understand the value add, with the InterFuse System. An MIS, large footprint interbody implant that allows for intraoperative surgeon choice and patient adaptability, especially in difficult clinical situations, is a value proposition that quickly aligns surgeons and care systems in their objective to deliver the best patient care possible.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
