A knee replacement system, produced by MicroPort Orthopedics, has a human partner and spokesman. He is NFL Hall of Famer, three-time Sports Emmy Award-winner and New York Times bestselling author, Terry Bradshaw.

Bradshaw is walking around with a MicroPort Evolution® MP Knee System in his leg that a team at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) led by its Orthopaedic Department chair and current president of the Arkansas Orthopaedic Association, C. Lowry Barnes, M.D. installed in December 2015.

The MicroPort’s knee replacement system and the football player have become buddies.

Bradshaw said, “My knee pain had become so excruciating I couldn’t sleep comfortably, stand upright, or walk up and down stairs. So my doctor recommended total knee replacement surgery. The Evolution® MP Knee System has completely eliminated my knee pain. From walking down stairs to squatting to fishing—I can do anything I want to do!”

As part of the endorsement agreement, MicroPort Orthopedics will share Bradshaw’s experience with the Evolution MP knee system to educate patients about knee replacement. “Terry’s story is one that represents so many of our patients at MicroPort, ” said John Matthews, Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “His experience with osteoarthritis, the Evolution MP Knee System, and the recovery process empowers them to take their life back through knee replacement.”

Company officials state that the Evolution MP Knee System is designed to move the way a healthy knee moves while maximizing stability and alleviating pain. They say that this results in higher patient satisfaction than other total knee replacement designs.

Established in January 2014, MicroPort Orthopedics Inc. is the fourth largest multinational producer of orthopedic products, claim company officials. From its headquarters in Arlington, Tennessee, MicroPort Orthopedics develops, produces and distributes OrthoRecon products. The company’s U.S.-based manufacturing and logistics capabilities deliver hip and knee products to patients and their doctors in over 60 countries.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
