Titan Spine has announced the full U.S. launch of its line of Endoskeleton titanium implants featuring the company’s new proprietary nanoLOCK surface technology.

Steve Cichy, vice president of Sales for Titan Spine, said in the October 13, 2016 news release, “The full launch of nanoLOCK will add to Titan Spine’s continued sales growth, highlighted by our 51% sales increase in 2015 compared to prior year. The interest in nanoLOCK has been incredibly strong and has challenged us to keep up with demand. We have generated a strong start and anticipate rapid surgeon adoption of nanoLOCK as we ramp up the full U.S. launch.” The technology was recently showcased the technology at the North American Spine Society (NASS) Annual Meeting in Boston.

Asked about the timing, Cichy told OTW, “We waited to fully launch nanoLOCK until we were confident we could meet demand from an inventory perspective. Also, we wanted to ensure that our recently-hired members of the sales team were fully trained on nanoLOCK and the science behind it. The timing was also influenced by NASS, which gave us the perfect venue to announce its full launch.”

“All of us at Titan are very excited to flood the market with nanoLOCK so that surgeons and patients can begin to benefit from this breakthrough technology. Furthermore, we look forward to rapidly collecting data on nanoLOCK through the use of its Section X new technology code.”

“The doubling of our sales management team will allow us to more aggressively penetrate key markets throughout the country and reach more surgeons with the exciting story behind our surface technologies.”

Asked how these managers were selected, Cichy commented to OTW, “I was looking specifically for tenured candidates that have the knowledge and expertise to articulate the science behind our nanoLOCK surface technology and its ability to spur bone growth. I also wanted them to have the ability to speak to the economic benefits of our products at the executive level within hospitals. The managers I hired meet both of these criteria and much more.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
