Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic (KJOC), a Cedars-Sinai affiliate, has expanded, with a new office in Thousand Oaks, California. This is the sixth location for KJOC, and is housed in the Sports Academy training facility.
Kerlan-Jobe Opens New Location

“With the Los Angeles Rams’ training facility located in Thousand Oaks combined with the city’s continued growth, it was imperative for us to find a new office location that meets the health care needs of the team and its community, ” said Ralph Gambardella, M.D., president and chairman of Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, in the November 22, 2016 news release. “With our dedicated team of medical professionals, we can efficiently and effectively deliver high quality medical care to both the players and local residents.”
As indicated in the news release, “Kerlan-Jobe’s new office provides patients with access to sports medicine specialists and orthopedic surgeons including Casey G. Batten, M.D., Christos D. Photopoulos, M.D., and Mona Zall, D.O. Dr. Batten is a double board-certified physician in family medicine and sports medicine and KJOC’s director of Primary Care Sports Medicine. He also serves as the lead primary care sports medicine physician for the Rams.”
“Dr. Photopoulos is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. His areas of clinical interest include arthroscopic surgery, joint preservation, knee replacement surgery, and fracture care. He is a team physician for the Rams and was an orthopedic consultant to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, and Los Angeles Sparks. Dr. Photopoulos has also been a consultant for a variety of other professional and collegiate athletic teams, including the PGA Tour and USC Football.”
“Dr. Zall is a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician with a specialization in interventional spine. Her clinical interests include nonoperative spinal procedures, biologics, nerve conduction and electromyography studies.”
Dr. Gambardella told OTW, “This project is progressing extremely well and we are excited about its potential to provide a comprehensive solution for patient’s orthopedic needs under one roof. It is the first time we have opened an orthopedic office within a sports facility and it has been great to collaborate with the Sports Academy because they share our dedication to serving the community.”
“The most challenging aspect was simply trying to convince everyone to ‘think out of the box’ and put this together as a win-win for both premier organizations. We are very encouraged about our new relationship and may use it as a model for the development of sports programs in other communities in the future.”

Discussion
This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
