Edward Mackey

Edward Mackey, executive vice president of Boston Scientific, has joined the Millstone Medical Outsourcing Board of Directors.

As indicated in the October 5, 2016 news release, Mackey was formerly worldwide president of DePuy Synthes Power Tools, a division of Johnson & Johnson, and vice president of Integration for Johnson & Johnson’s acquisition of Synthes from 2010 to 2012. Mackey started as plant manager with Johnson & Johnson in 1995 and advanced through a variety of supply chain and manufacturing roles, becoming worldwide vice president of Supply Chain and Manufacturing for DePuy in 2007.

“Ed has incredible orthopedic and leadership experience, ” said Chris Ramsden, chief executive officer at Millstone Medical. “With twenty-plus years of experience in the medical device sector and having had an outside perspective of Millstone since 2001, we believe he will bring tremendous value to our organization—helping to better serve customers and patients worldwide. We proudly welcome him to our Board of Directors.”

Mackey holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Mackey told OTW, “I hope to work with Millstone’s management team to gain a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s history and journey over the past several years. Short term, I hope to help Millstone refine the strategic direction of the company. Millstone has a unique value proposition for its customers and collectively our goal is to expand Millstone’s service offerings and continue to grow the overall customer base.”

“I am really looking forward to being back in the orthopedic industry. After spending 20 years in orthopedics I feel as though my experience and industry knowledge can help Millstone achieve the company’s mission and help them to better serve their customers.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
