DJO Global, Inc. recently unveiled their MotionMD software at the 2016 Annual Conference of the American Association of Orthopaedic Executives (AAOE).

As indicated in the June 9, 2016 news release, “MotionMD is an intuitive, web-based point-of-care solution designed to streamline claims management and inventory dispensing. This paperless software solution can help orthopedic clinics improve patient satisfaction, increase billing compliance and streamline workflow by providing seamless interoperability with clinic records.”

DJO Global Vice President Healthcare Solutions Mike Edwards told OTW, “MotionMD was designed to help doctors and staff deliver the best in patient care. This technology is a resource that will help DME [durable medical equipment] offices run more efficiently by seamlessly integrating into the current EMR/PM [electronic medical records/practice management] practice system, reducing the need for paper, automating supply chain management, and supporting compliance. Customers who have implemented MotionMD are reporting back that this software solution is performing very well and they are thrilled with the improvement in efficiency and financial performance.”

DJO Global Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer Mike Peters commented to OTW, “With more than 35 years as a leading orthopedic device manufacturer, DJO Global recognized the changes taking place in the healthcare environment and a need to improve the way orthopedic care is managed and delivered. We spent the last two years working with our partners and customers to truly understand what it would take to create an efficient system that would help them to better manage their business and deliver care.

“MotionMD is a point-of-care, automated software solution designed to improve workflow, assist in billing and dispensing of DME and provide real time inventory visibility and reporting capabilities. The intuitive features enable optimal performance across the practice (i.e., electronic signatures or ICD coding verification) while also supporting Industry best practices, like helping simplify inventory management and dispensing.

“MotionMD is an innovative new automated software solution that we truly believe will become a valuable resource for orthopedic practice executives and staff members. This web-based solution will seamlessly integrate with clinic systems to improve productivity in their offices and reduce duplication of efforts. It also supports the implementation of diagnosis driven protocols for DME. We have already deployed MotionMD to nearly 200 locations and the feedback we’ve received has been tremendous.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
