Bruce Cohen, M.D. will now take the helm at OrthoCarolina in the role of Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Cohen, a foot and ankle surgeon who has been with OrthoCarolina since its founding in 2005, will assume the post July 1, 2016. Former CEO Dr. Dan Murrey, M.D. is moving to lead Transformant Healthcare Solutions, a new company providing management services to private physician groups.

“I have great respect and appreciation for the work our staff and management do to serve our patients and our physicians every single day and I am looking forward to carrying on that dedication to excellence , ” said Dr. Cohen in the June 9, 2016 news release.

While at OrthoCarolina, Dr. Cohen has served as vice chairman of the Board of Directors and chair of the Operations Committee. Dr. Cohen has served as fellowship director of the OrthoCarolina Foot and Ankle Fellowship and subspecialty chief for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Carolinas Medical Center, helping lead foot and ankle innovation and education. He also has acted as principal investigator in numerous active research projects through the OrthoCarolina Research Institute (OCRI).

Dr. Cohen will continue his foot and ankle practice when he takes on his position of OrthoCarolina CEO. He is a past member of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Board of Directors and currently chairs its Education Committee.

“Dr. Cohen brings a balance of experience as practicing physician and organizational leadership that positions him well to guide OrthoCarolina and its practices on its continued path of exceptional patient care and practice management, ” said Dr. Murrey, who recommended Dr. Cohen to the OrthoCarolina Executive Committee for the post. “He is known nationally as an innovator, educator and leader, and his commitment to bettering the Charlotte community and its orthopedic services will continue through his leadership of OrthoCarolina.”

Dr. Cohen told OTW, “In the first few weeks my team and I will be focusing on meeting with the staff and providers to open lines of communication and identify needs and goals for the immediate future. We are proud of everything we have accomplished as a national leader in the delivery of orthopedic care and will continue to advance our excellence in patient care, one patient at a time.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
