Thousands of hips, knees, and other joints can rejoice…they now have access to Philadelphia’s largest orthopedic practice—Rothman Institute. Humana Inc. is teaming up with Rothman to give Humana members in-network access to Rothman Institute’s 130 physicians and 23 office locations throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Rothman Institute, Humana Join Forces

According to the April 21, 2016 news release, “The new network agreement includes all of Humana’s Medicare Advantage plans in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Humana membership has grown in Southeastern Pennsylvania in recent years, now including 8, 800 members in the region and approximately 41, 000 across the commonwealth. With Rothman Institute’s hip, knee, foot and spine programs and their advanced rehabilitation services, Humana officials believe members from across the Philadelphia five-county region will seek care at Rothman Institute.”
“Rothman Institute is excited to announce this agreement with Humana, ” said CEO Mike West. “A core principle of our practice is providing seniors with the highest quality of care, an affordable price, at a location close to their home. This partnership is a win-win for both Humana’s members and Rothman Institute, and we both anticipate a successful relationship.”
“Our Medicare Advantage membership has been growing quickly here in Southeastern Pennsylvania, ” said Eric Bohannon, Vice President of Humana Medicare Products in Pennsylvania. “Expanding our network to include Rothman Institute gives our members an even stronger network of world-class specialists to choose from.”
Mike West told OTW, “We are very pleased to expand our relationship with Humana by our participation in their Medicare Advantage plan. We feel this will help us better serve our local and regional communities.”

Discussion
This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
