In keeping with the personalization wave, Bodycad Laboratories, Inc. has announced the introduction of Bodycad OnCall, “its personalized, individually manufactured orthopaedic restorations for complex cases.”

“With complex cases, anatomy can be compromised in an endless number of ways which makes off-the-shelf implants a sub-optimal solution, ” says Dr. Brian Hamlin, associate director of the Bone and Joint Center of Magee-Womens Hospital of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, in the April 7, 2016 news release. “Bodycad OnCall allows us to customize the restoration with the goal of achieving better outcomes for the patient, ” says Hamlin.

As indicated in the news release, “The Personalized Restoration Evaluation Process (PREP) is guided by Bodycad PREP Techs, who collaborate with surgeons to achieve an anatomical fit for every patient. PREP Techs offer consultation and support on load bearing, joint articulation and orthopaedic correction. Bodycad OnCall uses state-of-the-art additive manufacturing (3D printing). The process involves applying successive layers of material in a precise configuration guided by the model created with Bodycad Personalized Restoration Software.”

“At Bodycad, we are changing the paradigm of joint restoration, ” says Jean Robichaud, founder and CEO. “A direct relationship between the surgeon and the prosthesis designer must be established, and mutual trust must be created, in order for a customized approach to deliver optimal results. Bodycad is pioneering this relationship.”

Bodycad’s Chief Commercial Officer Andrew McLeod told OTW, “The key challenge in the development process was to take advantage of the convergence of new innovations in manufacturing and our proprietary personalized restoration software for imaging, design, planning and manufacturing to efficiently, accurately produce a personalized restoration that has applications across orthopaedics.”

“Our corporate tagline, ‘The Pursuit of Orthopaedic Perfection, ’ reflects our belief that our technology and products bring patients, surgeons and providers closer to this goal.”

“Our personalized restoration evaluation process (PREP) follows three key steps: scan to plan, approve design, and restore. To facilitate this process and work directly with the surgeon our PREP Techs will work with the surgeon on the development of an optimal design solution. Prep Techs are trained in technology and have know-how of personalized restorations, we think of them as ‘master craftsperson.’ The PREP Tech will continue to work closely with the orthopaedic surgeon for the duration of their customer experience with Bodycad which will help understand preferences and come up with the best possible restoration for the patient and the surgeon.”

“This has been a guiding principle of our founder, Jean Robichaud. His belief, and the company’s vision, is that Bodycad will pioneer this new paradigm. There is nothing standard about orthopaedics. Bodycad’s proprietary Personalized Restoration Software enables personalized prostheses to be designed for a patient’s specific needs, not one size fits all, in a collaboration between the surgeon and the Bodycad PREP Tech.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
