OrthoAtlanta continues to expand, with its newest location, OrthoAtlanta Piedmont West, having just opened on Monday, February 29, 2016.

“We are excited to open the Piedmont West office to serve our patients with orthopaedic and sports medicine needs, ” stated Peter J. Symbas, OrthoAtlanta surgeon, in the March 8, 2016 news release. “The Piedmont West location is accessible to many who live or work in the burgeoning Howell Mill and West Midtown communities in Atlanta. Located at I-75 and Howell Mill Road, persons traveling from the greater Buckhead and Midtown areas will realize easy access, convenient parking, and one-stop for expert musculoskeletal care from initial examination, on-site X-ray, MRI, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation services including physical therapy.”

According to the news release, “The OrthoAtlanta Piedmont West office was designed with patient convenience, comfort and access in mind and provides patients with a single destination for all their orthopaedic and sports medicine needs. The facility includes twelve exam rooms, an Imaging Center with state-of-the-art Siemens MRI imaging equipment, on-site X-ray, a triage room and spacious open-design physical therapy area.”

Asked why this was a perfect location, Dr Symbas told OTW, “The newly opened OrthoAtlanta Piedmont West office is located within the Piedmont West Medical Office Building which is both recognizable and accessible at the intersection of I-75 South and Howell Mill Road. I-75 is a major north/south highway that runs through the center of Atlanta. The location is extremely convenient to major businesses, retail and entertainment hubs within Atlanta and to rapidly expanding residential neighborhoods, including Buckhead, Midtown, West Midtown and Atlantic Station. The Piedmont West medical complex includes an ambulatory surgery center for convenient one-day outpatient surgeries. An attached parking structure provides covered parking that is just steps away from easy-access entrances and elevators, all designed with patient convenience and care in mind.”

“Interestingly, the new OrthoAtlanta Piedmont West office is just two miles from our existing OrthoAtlanta Piedmont office, which is located on the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital campus. Together, these two offices complement each other to provide comprehensive orthopaedic care to our patients across all orthopaedic and sports medicine specialties including bone, joint, spine and pain management musculoskeletal care.”

“The OrthoAtlanta Piedmont West office provides one-stop convenience to patients from initial examination, on-site MRI imaging and X-ray, to diagnosis, treatment and post-operative physical therapy and rehabilitation. On-site MRI Imaging is delivered with a state-of-the-industry Siemens magnet. This more powerful magnet delivers better detail and resolution of images while the shorter size of the overall unit can allow patients’ heads to remain outside the unit depending on the scan. Patients who experience claustrophobia can find this to be a more comforting experience. The location features a spacious, open design physical therapy area, with multiple treatment stations and the latest equipment for rehabilitation needs.”

“The OrthoAtlanta Piedmont West office is staffed by OrthoAtlanta physicians Richard B. Johnston, M.D., M. Jonathan Mathers, M.D., and Peter J. Symbas, M.D. Each physician is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and fellowship trained in sports medicine.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
