CoolCast Arm and Leg Wrap Debuts

A new company is breaking into the cast space…. Advanced Healing Medical Devices, a start-up specializing in therapeutic aids for bone fractures, sprains and strains, has debuted the new CoolCast at the 2016 annual American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) meeting.

“We are very encouraged by the tremendous amount of positive feedback this product has garnered within the orthopedics community, ” said Matt Bentzen, founder and CEO of Advanced Healing, in the February 29, 2016 news release.

As indicated in the news release, “CoolCast is a breathable arm or leg wrap that is positioned around the extremity prior to casting. A pump system circulates ice water throughout the wrap, protecting skin from thermal injury during casting, reducing swelling under the cast and providing continuous pain relief. The product design and material also facilitate airflow under the cast, minimizing skin irritation…. CoolCast can also be used with hot water for intermittent heat/ice therapy.”

Karen Luthart of Advanced Healing Medical Devices told OTW, “CoolCast is the only product on the market that addresses the complications associated with wearing a cast. It’s the only icing system that fits directly under the cast to minimize swelling and pain throughout the entire injured area (not just the proximal and distal ends of the casted area). (FYI…Excessive swelling under the cast can sometimes lead to Compartment Syndrome, which causes permanent nerve damage.) It also creates an air channel between the cast and the skin, which minimizes skin irritation under the cast.”

“We would like orthopedic surgeons to understand that CoolCast also has other applications, such as post-op and in conjunction with boots and braces. CoolCast does not use a bladder system. It provides continuous pumping action of ice water at 140 gallons per minute, which minimizes the effect of heat transfer from the injury and maintains cold temperatures. Besides icing, CoolCast can also be used for hot/cold (contrast) therapy as well. This product will be available as a wrap and a sleeve.”
