Case Connector, has announced that, effective January 1, 2016, Ronald W. Lindsey, M.D., joined Tom Bauer, M.D. as Co-Editor of Case Connector. Dr. Swiontkowski has stepped down from his role as Case Connector Co-Editor but will remain as Editor-in Chief of JBJS. “I am confident that Ron and Tom will help move Case Connector into position as a foremost resource for clinicians seeking guidance and information on rare and unusual conditions from across the globe, ” said Dr. Swiontkowski on the JBJS OrthoBuzz website.

Dr. Lindsey is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation at the University of Texas Medical Branch, as well as a former Associate Editor for JBJS. After receiving his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completing an orthopedic residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Dr. Lindsey pursued several fellowships at prestigious European orthopedic institutions, including AO and spine fellowships at the University of Basel, and a spine fellowship at the University of Marseilles.
“I look forward to working with Dr. Bauer and the JBJS Case Connector editorial board to continue building a premier online database of peer-reviewed orthopaedic cases and the technology that enables orthopaedists to efficiently filter case information, ” said Dr. Lindsey. “Our goal will always be to assist orthopaedic surgeons in the search for clinical precedents, connections, and trends in their efforts to improve patient care.”
Dr. Lindsey told OTW, “With the help of fellow Co-Editor Tom Bauer and our editorial board, my first steps will be to ensure a seamless transition into my new role and uphold the venerable goal and vision of my predecessor, Marc Swiontkowski who established JBJS Case Connector as the leading resource for rare and/or unusual orthopaedic cases worldwide.”
“My priorities are to increase the number and quality of manuscript submissions from around the globe, to maintain and expand a group of competent reviewers who are experts in their respective fields, and to grow the readership. Ultimately, this would make JBJS Case Connector a vibrant online platform for exchanging orthopaedic experience and knowledge.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
