In just five years they have achieved crazy low readmission rates and accolades from the likes of U.S. News & World Report and Harvard. And Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) officially celebrated its 5th anniversary on Tuesday, November 10, 2015.
Hoag Orthopedic Institute Celebrates 5th Anniversary!

“Every single employee and physician contributed to HOI’s incredible accomplishments and successes, ” said Carlos Prietto, M.D., president of Hoag Orthopedic Institute, in the November 12, 2015 news release. “HOI is outstanding because the HOI team is outstanding.”
“The culture of excellence and pride in performance that has been fostered and refined here is unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed, ” added Dereesa Reid, CEO of HOI. “I’m truly honored to be a part of what Hoag Orthopedic Institute has become for our staff and for those we care for in such a short period of time.”
As indicated in the news release, “Ranked a ‘Best Hospital’ multiple times by U.S. News & World Report, HOI was the first hospital in Greater Los Angeles to receive a CMS [Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services] 5 Star Rating for patient experience. It received Consumer Reports’ highest rating for hip and knee surgery and was ranked first place by Nerd Wallet for knee and hip procedures. HOI has also received the highest possible rankings from Becker’s Hospital Review for orthopedic programs and its low readmission rates and Press Ganey for HCAHPS [Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems] scores. HOI was recognized as a top performer in the treatment of fragility fractures and bone healthcare by the American Orthopaedic Association. Moreover, its unique and effective model of care was profiled in a case study authored by researchers from Harvard Business School.”
Dereesa Reid told OTW, “HOI hosted a team celebration event in October at which we honored our staff and all those who’ve helped us reach this milestone. We are currently writing and editing our upcoming 2016 Outcomes Book which will feature information about our five-year journey and the evolution of HOI and its many milestones. We will continue to drive value and deliver top quality and outstanding patient satisfaction at a reasonable price.”

Discussion
This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
