Minnesota-based Orthology has moved into New York City by acquiring NYSportsMed (NYSM).

A September 10, 2015 press announcement said that NYSM currently operates three locations in the city at Columbus Circle, Union Square and Midtown. Orthology is also opening a location this month at 667 Madison Avenue.

The companies hold themselves out as “an innovative, cost-effective solution for rapid recovery from back and body injuries, chronic pain, and orthopedic surgeries, as well as ongoing ‘TuneUp’ wellness care.”

Orthology was founded in 2014 by Josh Sandell, DC, DACBSP, CSCS, ICSSD. Since then he opened seven locations in Minnesota and additional locations in Washington, D.C.

Sandell’s website says he is a sports medicine specialist for the Minnesota Vikings and currently serves as advisor to sports training facilities, medical clinics, NFL agencies, and health care organizations. His list of patients includes over 500 professional athletes from the NFL, CFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, WNBA, MMA, and PGA as well as Olympic athletes from around the country and the world. He has worked at the United States Olympic Center, and was selected as the official Team USA chiropractor for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Orthology’s services are based on a patent-pending, research-based methodology developed by Sandell to, “rapidly resolve injuries, restore function, and improve athletic performance.” The services are delivered by collaborative care teams of physical therapists, chiropractors, and soft tissue specialists.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
