Corin Group PLC, a global manufacturer and supplier of orthopedic devices, has acquired Optimized Ortho, an Australian orthopedics technology company. Optimized Ortho specializes in providing surgeons with technologies for optimizing orthopedic implant component positioning.
Corin Group Takes the Leap With Optimized Ortho

The acquisition provides Corin with an IP-protected technology–called Optimized Positioning System (OPS)—that is the first of its kind in the orthopedic field. Corin officials believe that the combination of this technology together with Corin Group’s hip portfolio and expanding global distribution network, provide a strong foundation for future growth of the company.
Officials of Optimized Ortho explain that every patient has a unique pelvic motion which influences how a total hip replacement will function in day-to-day activities. The OPS technology, for the first time, gives the surgeon the ability to identify, customize and deliver an exact patient-specific component orientation designed to optimize biomechanics and functional joint performance.
According to the press release, “A simple physical assessment and imaging protocol generates data unique to the patient which is then analyzed using patented simulation software to determine the patient’s individual kinematic and pelvic motion profile. Implants are then accurately placed to optimize function using a laser-guided alignment system.”
Officials of both companies believe that “this solution is a significant step forward in helping to improve the performance of total hip replacements for an ageing and more active patient population.” They note that guidance for the positioning of acetabular cups was defined about 36 years ago.
Corin Chief Executive Officer Stefano Alfonsi said: “We are delighted to have the ability to integrate this technology into our product portfolio. We recognize that further improvements in hip replacement require developments around procedural innovation as well as implant design. Our vision for the future will be to lead in the area of personalized healthcare, with a specific focus on individual patient-specific dynamics.”
Optimized Ortho Chief Technology Officer Brad Miles added: “We are very excited to be entering into this agreement with one of the most dynamic and proactive global orthopaedic implant organizations. We have worked closely with Corin in Australia to combine OPS technology with their leading hip brands and this agreement marks a major milestone in creating a game changing solution for hip patients worldwide.”

Discussion
This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
