Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) has been named the “Official Hospital of USA Basketball.” USA Basketball has announced a number of other new marketing partnerships, including those with Samsung and Diageo. Each entity will promote its brand and products throughout USA Basketball Men’s and Women’s National Team training camp, exhibition games, media, and during special events taking place this summer in Las Vegas, Chicago, and New York.
HSS Named “Official Hospital of USA Basketball”

According to the July 30, 2014 news release, the Jeep brand, Nike, Las Vegas, Wynn Las Vegas, and BBVA will also conduct activities during the summer as the 2014 USA Basketball Men’s National Team prepares for the 2014 FIBA (International Basketball Federation) Basketball World Cup in Spain from August 30 – September 14.
“This is a busy summer for USA Basketball, as both our men’s and women’s national teams are preparing to compete at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup and the FIBA World Championship for Women. In advance of the competitions in Spain and Turkey, the USA Basketball Men’s and Women’s National Teams will be appearing in several U.S. cities to bring the USA Basketball experience to thousands of fans through exhibition games, special events, and community and grassroots programs that celebrate our players and our team, ” said Jerry Colangelo, USA Basketball chairman and national team managing director in the news release. “We are thrilled to have Samsung, HSS, and Diageo join our roster of partners, all of whom have committed through 2016. Our partners are integral in helping us connect with fans and bringing them closer to USA Basketball through live events, as well as content and programming, as our teams prepare to represent our country this summer.”
HSS is the first medical center to be recognized as the “Official Hospital of USA Basketball.” Physicians and other healthcare professionals will bring their excellence to the USA Basketball players throughout training camp and will be available on the sidelines for all exhibition games and the FIBA World Cup. HSS physicians will also take to the airways on the NBA TV’s Real Training Camp series.
As indicated in the news release, the 2014 USA Basketball Men’s National Team training camp opened in Las Vegas on July 28, and on August 1, the Thomas & Mack Center will host the USA Basketball Showcase, featuring a Blue-White intrasquad exhibition game between members of the USA Men’s National Team. Following a 12-day break, the Men’s National Team will reassemble in Chicago on August 13, for additional training. While in Chicago, Nike, Jordan Brand, and USA Basketball will host the third World Basketball Festival on the lakefront parks of Chicago. The Chicago trip will close with an exhibition contest versus Brazil at the United Center on August 16. The team will conclude its stateside World Cup preparations August 18-22 in New York City with two exhibition games at Madison Square Garden, the first against the Dominican Republic on August 20 and the second versus Puerto Rico on August 22.

Discussion
This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
