Jeffrey Jones: New COO at Benvenue Medical
Jeffrey Jones

Benvenue Medical, Inc. has announced that Jeffrey Jones has joined the company as chief operating officer. Jones, formerly vice president of operations at Acclarent, Inc., brings more than 20 years of related operations experience with both medical technology start-up and Fortune 500 companies to the newly created position. In his new role, Jones has responsibility for working with the senior management team to develop current and long range plans. He will also be creating objectives and policies, and will lead Benvenue’s operations, manufacturing, development and quality departments.

The company indicates that while Jones was at Acclarent he supported rapid sales growth and was responsible for supply chain, manufacturing operations, process engineering, materials, purchasing, facilities, and environmental health and safety. Jones has also held chief operating officer positions at a number of Bay Area medical device startups, including Polyremedy, Inc.; Reliant Technologies, Inc.; and Lumend, Inc. Earlier in his career, he served as vice president of operations for Boston Scientific Corp., after it acquired EP Technologies, where Jones also served as vice president of operations. He holds a bachelor of science in engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a master of business administration in management from Golden Gate University, and he is Six Sigma Black Belt certified.

Benvenue CEO Rob Weigle told OTW, “Jeff is well regarded in the medical device industry, and he has a wealth of experience in scaling the operations of medical device companies as they undergo rapid sales growth, as we are at Benvenue. We are ramping up commercialization of our flagship product, Kiva, and planning an upcoming FDA submission of Luna, a novel product for degenerative disc disease. Jeff’s successful track history with both medical technology start-ups and Fortune 500 companies make him the ideal individual to help drive our growth in a $9 billion global spine market.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
