The strategic intelligence gurus at ORTHOWORLD®, Inc., leading producer of strategic intelligence for the orthopedic industry, announced its education curriculum for OMTEC® 2014, the 10th Annual Orthopaedic Manufacturing & Technology Exposition and Conference (OMTEC). Slated for June 11-12 in Chicago, Illinois, OMTEC will welcome nearly 1, 000 industry executives from more than 200 unique companies and 16 countries.

“OMTEC’s advisory panel prioritized the critical issues represented in the education lineup, ” commented Carolyn LaWell, content manager, in the April 29, 2014 news release. “Proficiency in design for manufacturability, FDA expectations, supplier compliance and globalization solutions are consistently high-ranking areas for instruction and will be covered.” Orthopedic device manufacturers will need to comply with FDA’s Unique Device Identification (UDI) rule by September 24, 2014 and OMTEC has recruited Karen Conway of GHX (Global Healthcare Exchange, LLC) along with leaders of UDI compliance at Medtronic, Inc. and Johnson & Johnson to bolster attendees’ preparedness efforts.

“A new Knowledge Center on the exhibit floor will provide attendees with access to experts on device packaging design and testing, as well as global regulatory challenges related to raw materials, ” added LaWell.

“Dozens of technical sessions, panel discussions and lectures offered in the classrooms and on the exhibit floor facilitate problem-solving amongst attendees, ensuring that folks return to the workplace with real, practical solutions for getting the right things done, ” stated Julie Vetalice, content coordinator at ORTHOWORLD. “OMTEC’s 135 exhibitors play a key role in helping attendees maximize their new knowledge by partnering with them in the execution of new techniques, ” added Vetalice.

Carolyn LaWell told OTW, “Simply put, OMTEC’s success is measured by the degree to which we’ve met or exceeded customer expectations. When OMTEC is a success in the eyes of our customers, it is a success in ours. And, the only way to know for certain is to ask. We leverage feedback from prior years’ conferences to make improvements to subject matter, session length and unopposed floor time. We hold feedback sessions with OMTEC’s OEM and Supplier Advisory Boards onsite and execute comprehensive surveys post-event.”

“OMTEC’s longevity, ten years this June, is directly related to how well we’ve listened to our customers and responded to their challenges. This is not a new concept, certainly. The key, above all else, is having people genuinely interested and committed to acquiring new knowledge about the customer with every encounter and diligently advocating for response. ORTHOWORLD is fortunate to have just those types of people.”

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
