Jeff Rydin will be leaving his post as president of global sales for NuVasive, Inc. at the end of March 2013.
Rydin Resigns as NuVasive Sales Leader

The company made the announcement on October 8, only days after a hastily scheduled conference call with analysts describing unexpected and disappointing preliminary sales results for the just completed third quarter.
Company Chairman and CEO Alex Lukianov will assume all U.S. sales responsibilities. Russell Powers, newly promoted to executive vice president of international, will assume international sales responsibilities.
Lukianov said the company will begin an immediate search for Rydin’s replacement. “In the interim, I will leverage my many years of experience executing sales strategies and leading sales forces like I did during my time at Medtronic Sofamor Danek as senior vice president of Sales and Marketing and then later as president of U.S.A. While there for six years, I built the sales force and grew [the company] to the #1 market share position through a culture focused on innovation and responsiveness. My added interim direct reports are two senior vice presidents of U.S. Sales (West and East) and senior vice president of Sales Operations.”
After his resignation takes effect, Rydin will continue to work with the company through September 30, 2016 as a consultant in the areas of sales force expansion, surgeon engagement, etc. He will provide up to 20 hours per month through September 2015 and then 10 per month through September 2016. He will be paid $38, 500 per month through September 2014, $10, 000 per month through September 2015 and $5, 000 per month through September 2016.

Russell Powers/NuVasive, Inc.Rydin agrees not to compete with the company during the term of the consulting services.
He said he had been contemplating leaving the company for months and the decision to leave was very difficult.
Lukianov said Powers, after focusing on product marketing, development, and operations at NuVasive since April 2012, is “now ready to leverage his years of experience while at Medtronic Sofamor Danek.” Powers was vice president of International Spinal and Biologics at Medtronic where his responsibilities included international sales, marketing and development, as well as global operations.

Discussion
This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
