Feet and ankles in distress have a new go-to guy at the Rothman Institute. The Philadelphia practice is announcing that David I. Pedowitz, M.S., M.D. is its newest foot and ankle surgeon.

“We are excited to have Dr. Pedowitz join the Rothman organization, ” said Mike West, CEO, in the May 5, 2011 news release. “He is a wonderful addition to our team of accomplished and respected physicians.”

Dr. Pedowitz was previously an Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at Pennsylvania Hospital and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

He earned his Medical Degree from the MCP Hahneman School of Medicine (Drexel University College of Medicine) and completed his orthopedic surgical residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He earned his Foot and Ankle Reconstruction Fellowship with Roger A. Mann, M.D. at the Oakland Bone and Joint Institute in Oakland, California.

Commenting on how a fellowship with Dr. Mann prepared him for this new role, Dr. Pedowitz told OTW,

Dr. Mann is one of the most accomplished orthopedic surgeons in our profession’s history and he has helped shape the subspecialty of foot and ankle reconstruction. His mentorship and training have specifically provided me with experience and critical thinking, required to best serve my patients who present with foot and ankle pathology.

Regarding his first steps in this new role, Dr. Pedowitz told OTW,

As the only orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in the treatment of foot and ankle disorders at Bryn Mawr and Lankenau Hopspitals, my efforts will initially focus on introducing myself to the surrounding community and letting them know that these new services are available in their neighborhoods.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
