Philadelphia-area knees in need now have another skilled set of hands on hand…Jess H. Lonner M.D., renown for his expertise in minimally invasive techniques for partial and total knee replacement surgery, has joined the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Lonner, known as a leader in the use of robotic assistance during knee replacement surgery, was previously the Director of Knee Replacement Surgery, the Total Joint Arthroplasty Fellowship and Orthopaedic Research at Pennsylvania Hospital. Dr. Lonner has been the recipient of citations and awards for his clinical, research and educational work.

Dr. Lonner attended Boston University School of Medicine and completed his Orthopaedic Surgical Residency at The Hospital for Joint Diseases in Manhattan. He earned his Knee Arthroplasty/Reconstruction Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
He currently serves on the Governing Board of The Knee Society and as President of the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society. He has authored over 100 peer reviewed scientific publications and chapters, co-designed several innovative knee replacements and published several prominent textbooks on knee replacement surgery.
Dr. Lonner told OTW,
First and foremost, my priority is to continue to provide top level, innovative and compassionate care for my patients, many of whom have benefited from the unique minimally invasive techniques for partial knee replacements and robotic assisted knee surgery that I provide.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?
Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.
We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
