Georgia, one of your native sons has come home…Hughston Clinic, with locations in Georgia and Alabama, has announced that Benjamin J. Schwartz, M.D., an expert in knee and adult reconstructive surgery, has joined their team. Dr. Schwartz is now practicing at Hughston Clinic’s Columbus, Auburn and Dothan locations.

Dr. Schwartz, a Columbus, Georgia, native from Brookstone High School, is a fellowship-trained, board-certified physician. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College. He was an intern and resident at Boston University School of Medicine, and an Adult Reconstruction Fellow at Anderson Orthopaedic Institute in Virginia.

Prior to joining Hughston Clinic, he spent two years at a Pennsylvania practice specializing in total joint treatment. Recently, Dr. Schwartz was inducted into the American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons and certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Schwartz to our truly gifted and exceptional group of doctors at Hughston Clinic, ” stated Hughston Clinic/Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital CEO Mark Baker, in the news release. “He is passionate about his patients and the care he offers, and his ability to uphold our standards of treatment, education, and research is exceptional.”

Dr. Schwartz told OTW,

I believe it is an honor to join an organization with the local, national, and international reputation of the Hughston Clinic. During my first few months, I hope to call upon my excellent training in orthopaedic surgery, particularly total joint replacement, to establish a rapport with the local community and primary care providers which will allow me to deliver quality specialty care. I am confident that my training and past experience in private practice in Pennsylvania will allow me to provide the same high level of care as my new Hughston clinic partners.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
