Deirmengian Brothers Join Rothman Institute
The Rothman Institute

“Joint venture” to benefit joints…Dr. Gregory K. Deirmengian, a joint replacement surgeon, along with his brother, Dr. Carl A. Deirmengian, a hip and knee specialist, have recently joined the Philadelphia-based Rothman Institute.

Dr. Greg Deirmengian obtained his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, and earned a medical degree and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a hip and knee reconstruction fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Greg Deirmengian, a Broomall, Pennsylvania native, is a Clinical Instructor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr. Gregory Deirmengian told OTW,

I am very excited to be part of The Rothman Institute. While starting in a new role is always challenging, I feel that this group provides me the best opportunity to flourish in practice and accomplish my goal of providing quality patient care.

Dr. Carl A. Deirmengian specializes in performing hip and knee replacements as well as other general orthopedic disorders. His specific focuses are minimally-invasive techniques and rapid-recovery protocols.

Dr. Carl Deirmengian previously worked as an attending surgeon at 3B Orthopaedics. He is actively involved in both clinical and basic science research, giving frequent lectures at national meetings and has been published extensively in the orthopedic literature. He has also received numerous national awards for his research on joint replacement surgery.

Dr. Carl Deirmengian told OTW,

Joining The Rothman Institute has been an extremely positive experience. Considering the enthusiasm and skill of the practice in providing an organized infrastructure for care of my patients at Lankenau Hospital, I am confident in knowing that we can provide the highest quality of care for patients needing a joint replacement.

This is a fascinating development. In my practice we've seen similar outcomes with the revised protocol. The key differentiator seems to be patient selection criteria. Has anyone else noticed the correlation with BMI thresholds?

Great point. I'd push back slightly on the conclusion, the sample size in the cited study is too small to draw population-level inferences. That said, the directional signal is compelling and worth a larger RCT.

We implemented a similar approach last year. Early results are promising but we're still gathering 12-month follow-up data. Happy to share our protocol if anyone is interested.
